With sumi e work, anything is possible. Some of you may want to work in a more traditional manner – the above is about as close to traditional as I come – but there are endless ways you can make your art, each according to your own style and how the spirit moves you.

Not a Class on Techniques

In this workshop, I present you with an experience. It will not be a regular 1-2-3 follow me and do prescribed techniques. Instead I want us to explore together the way of the Tao, practicing releasement of our thinking process, judgment, criticism, emotional entanglements and analytical thinking. When your mind is clear of these ways of perceiving, the door slowly opens to another way of perceiving, the way of heart and soul. This is the level of intuition—the path of the mystics, who believed a way of Knowing not based on purely rational process.

On your internet you will find this definition of a mystic: “a person who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with or absorption into the Deity or the absolute, or who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect.”

You can’t get there by thinking about it.

This doesn’t mean you don’t need some techniques and skills. I will share knowledge about materials you will want to begin your work with and some basic techniques for applying sumi (ink) on e (paper).

Dharma Talk and Inquiry

This just means we’re going to talk about the path awhile, to remind you how the path, the Tao, goes. The teachings are endless; we will touch on one or another aspect for reflection. I will invite your comments and questions.

Because most of you are beginners, I will talk a bit about brushes and my recommendations for materials. I will show you a few brushstrokes to help you feel more confident in what-to-do basics.
